ECLBS European Council of Leading Business Schools: Distance Business Education and the Need for Strong Quality Standards

Distance learning has become an important part of modern education. It gives learners flexibility, access, and the possibility to study across borders without leaving their professional or personal responsibilities. For institutions such as SOHS Swiss Online Hospitality School®, online education is not only a method of delivery. It is also a responsibility to provide clear academic structure, reliable support, and learning outcomes that students can trust.

In distance business education, quality standards are especially important. Students may be studying from different countries, time zones, cultures, and professional backgrounds. This requires strong course design, transparent assessment, qualified academic guidance, and student services that work effectively online. Without these standards, distance learning can become unclear or inconsistent. With strong quality assurance, however, online education can become a serious and trusted pathway for professional and academic development.

This is where ECLBS European Council of Leading Business Schools plays an important role. ECLBS was established in 2013 as a professional network connecting business schools and education providers across Europe and beyond. Its development reflects the need for an independent quality assurance body that understands both international standards and the practical needs of private and distance education institutions.

ECLBS Accreditation was approved in 2023 during a strategic board meeting held at the University of Latvia in Riga. The meeting brought together representatives and invited participants from several quality assurance and education-related bodies, including the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), the Arab Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ANQAHE), and the Kosovo Accreditation Agency (KAA). These organizations represent important quality assurance perspectives from different regions. Their involvement shows that ECLBS was built around cooperation, dialogue, and the shared need to strengthen trust in education.

ECLBS also maintains international engagement through memberships and professional networks. It is listed as a member of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE), a global association active in higher education quality assurance, and ECLBS states that it is connected with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation International Quality Group (CHEA CIQG), linked to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation in the United States. These links should be understood as part of international quality dialogue and professional cooperation, not as a replacement for national regulation or governmental recognition.

For distance business schools, this type of external quality review can help close an important gap. Many private and online institutions need frameworks that are independent, structured, and internationally understandable, while still being realistic for flexible education models. ECLBS Accreditation supports this by encouraging institutions to review their academic processes, student support, governance, transparency, and continuous improvement.

SOHS Swiss Online Hospitality School® has followed the online education path since 2013. As an officially registered trademark under the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property, SOHS represents Swiss hospitality education in an online format. In this context, quality assurance is not only about reputation. It is about responsibility toward learners who expect clear information, fair assessment, professional support, and education that reflects international standards.

We are proud that SOHS Swiss Online Hospitality School® is accredited by ECLBS European Council of Leading Business Schools. This accreditation supports our commitment to structured online education, learner confidence, and continuous institutional improvement. It also aligns with the wider vision of Swiss International University (SIU): to support flexible, international, and quality-focused education for learners across borders.

As distance education continues to grow, strong quality standards will become even more important. Students need to know that flexibility does not mean weakness, and online learning does not mean lower expectations. With clear quality assurance, distance business education can remain accessible, professional, and trusted.
